C. Harry Benedict was born in Pittsburg, PA in 1876 where he attended public schools until attending Cornell University. Teaching at Cornell for just a year, he soon moved to Michigan's Copper Country to take a job with Calumet & Hecla Mining Company. He was associated with Calumet & Hecla for 50 years, 47 of which were spent as chief metallurgist.
